Bastille area of Paris guide
The Bastille area which was once a working class neighbourhood was the site of the onset of the French Revolution in 1789. Today, the Bastille area of Paris, France which falls under the jurisdiction of Marais, in the third, fourth and fifth arrondissements of Paris has become one of the trendiest places in Paris for tourists to visit.
The Bastille area has something to offer every tourist, with its vast array of:
- bars
- restaurants
- galleries
- and markets.
If you ever find yourself in this region of Paris, do not forget to visit the Colonne de Juilletwhich was erected by the French people in remembrance 
of all those wholost their lives during the French Revolution.
The original Bastille which served as the royal treasury and a prison for those who had committed crimes against the Crown, was broken down during the revolution and the Colonne de Juillet stands in its place.
Tourists to France should also try to visit any or all of the Bastille’s markets. Head to the Marche Richard-Lenoir for some of the best home-cooked dishes and local wines in Paris or the Marche d’Aligre, which is well-renowned for its fruits and vegetables. You could even visit the Marche Beauveau, known for its delicious food and variety of meats, be it wild boar or deer.
Shoppers will love the Bastille area for its hand-blown glass, baroque tapestries and jewellery. Alternate and more mainstream shopping can be done at various parts of the Bastille like the Rue de Charronné and Rue Keller.
After a day of shopping, visitors can take a break at one of the many cafes in the region. At night, you can dine in style at one of the Bastille area’s finer restaurants like Chez Paul.
