St Germain is a former suburb of Paris that is located in the Left Bank region of the city. St Germain is renowned for being historically intertwined with the French intellectualism movement and also because it was Medieval Europe’s centre of education. This area is located along the southern shore of the Seine and is bordered on the east by the Invalides and the Tour Eiffel Quarter. To the south of St. Germain is the Luxembourg Quarter and to the West of this region is the Latin Quarter.

Visitors to St Germain will be excited to see the Café Les Deux Magots and the Café de Flore, as well as the Brasserie Lipp. It was in these cafés that intellectuals and writers congregated to unwind and write; these cafes were also frequented by the French existentialists. Today, St. Germain des Prés is more famous for its gift shops, Greek eateries and wonderful bars. While some Parisians mourn the loss of culture in this area, others now flock here to get their share of excitement in the bookstores, crowded nightclubs and shops.

The centre of the area is occupied by the famous church of St. Germain des Prés. This church was originally built in the 3rd century AD, but was later rebuilt in 1163. With a Gothic interior, the church of St. Germain des Prés is home to many classical concerts. Apart from the church, St. Germain also has other interesting attractions including the:

• Cour de Rohan
• Théâtre National de l’Odéon
• Institut de France.

There are also many museums in St. Germain like the Musée Nationale de la Légion d’Honneur, the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée Eugène Delacroix.
